When an Albatross first returns to the colony it will dance with many partners, but after a number of years the number of birds an individual will interact with drops, until one partner is chosen and a pair is formed. They then continue to perfect an individual language that will eventually be unique to that one pair. Having established a bond that will last for life.
I have had a keen interest in photography and art since I was about 14 years old. My first memories of taking photographs were in school, where I would persuade classmates to stomp to the surrounding grounds to set up and shoot them in various situations. I have never forgotten the buzz and excitement of developing those photographs and that feeling is still with me today.
I have been involved with broadcast and creative media all my working life. After returning from travelling when I was 19 years old, I realised that I wanted to pursue a career in creative media. Living in the South Wales Valleys, my options were very limited and opportunities in that direction were few and far between. Luckily for me, a television production company had just relocated from Cardiff to the Valleys. After much perseverance, followed by 6 weeks of working for free, they finally offered me a job. Whilst there, I worked as a Boom Operator (microphone on a pole), Stage Technician and Camera Assistant. I used the skills and acquired knowledge from there to get my next job at ITV Wales News. I loved the fast paced environment and tight deadlines of the newsroom environment, and during this time I learnt how to edit video, firstly on tape to tape machines then moving to NLE edit systems (computer editing). I got such a thrill out of telling the best story I could with the journalists words and cameraman’s footage.
In 2005 I moved to Oxford to live with my future wife. I spent the first 5 years as a senior video editor for an internet TV production company based in the Cotswolds. Since then I have been fully involved in the production of many feature documentaries on such artists as BB King (BBC), Nat King Cole (BBC), Jimi Hendrix,(BBC), Jim Morrison (SKY) and Bad Company (DVD)
My camera has never been far from my side and when my passion for still photography overtook my love of editing “Black Albatross Photography” was born.
